ED Wall Times

The interval between arrival of an ambulance patient at the ED until the EMS and ED personnel transfer the patient to an ED stretcher and the ED staff assume the responsibility for care for the patient.

The Standard

In Alameda County, we consider a reasonable amount of time for turnover of patient care from EMS to ED staff to be 30 minutes.

The Issue

Wall times have steadily increased over the last few years. The impact of recent ED closures has had an effect.

The Goal

We are working with our local ED partners to reduce wall times to under 30 minutes. With cooperation, it’s an attainable goal.

The Bottom Line

When an ambulance is kept at an ED over 30 minutes, the financial impact to the 9-1-1 system equates to $1.98/minute. It is projected that there will be a $1,043,224.56 impact on the system due to extended ED wall times.
